KIDS OF NATURE INITIATIVE
Children are key to the preservation of the environment and humanity.
You can only care for something you love; and being connected with nature enhances wellbeing. There are many projects that focus on green actions, but Kids of Nature believes that not enough is being done to enable children to actually feel connected with their natural environment.
Kids of Nature addresses one of the key issues of today's society: Nature Deficit Disorder (NDD)* - the alienation of children from their natural environment resulting in emotional imbalance, violence, mismanagement of natural resources and climate change.
Urbanisation and materialistic aspirations are major causes of NDD which is affecting children at all levels of society. NDD has reached alarming levels in the USA and the numbers are growing in Europe.
If we do not address this issue effectively, South Africa too will be affected dramatically. Increasing numbers of young children already suffer from obesity and depression. The decline of the spirit of Ubuntu, increased violence and unsustainable practices are already there. If we want to contribute to building a healthy country and invest in a new generation of leaders who have the ability to combine technology and profit in a spirit of environmental sustainability, we must deal with the issue of NDD now.
Kids of Nature addresses this issue by inspiring families, carers and educators to re-connect and live in harmony with nature. Kids of Nature does so through a wide array of multimedia productions and useful resources. Photography is key; the sublime visuals used in Kids of Nature deliver a message of beauty and hope in a negative context of climate change, violence and HIV.
We urge you to help us build a new generation of globally responsible decision makers, who are not only smart, but also innovative in their way of combining technology, business and sound environmental practices.
